CIO Message | July 2025

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to share a few key updates that reflect the momentum we are building, together with our campus partners, toward a more seamless, secure and modern digital experience for UCLA.

Safeguarding Our Digital Campus

  • After launching the Asset Inventory project, which created a repository of network-connected devices, the Bruin Connect and Secure (BCS) team has begun the next phase. This phase focuses on improving compliance through data classification and the automation of IT asset discovery, enabling more consistent and efficient management of technology assets across campus.
  • The BCS team has completed the rollout of two key cybersecurity tools: Trellix and the first phase of Duo Desktop. These tools enhance protection for campus devices and critical systems. Digital & Technology Solutions (DTS) will continue to expand the coverage of Duo Desktop in order to strengthen UCLA’s cybersecurity posture.

Modernizing Our Network Infrastructure

  • The BCS Network Unification team continues to advance plans for a unified campus network. A multi-phase deployment strategy is in development, along with an updated operational model that will be refined in collaboration with campus stakeholders. This work is foundational to building a more resilient, efficient, and secure network infrastructure through a unified framework.

Elevating the Academic Digital Experience

  • The new Bruin Financial Aid system has disbursed over $45 million in aid for Summer 2025. The team is continuing to enhance system performance and is working closely with campus partners to ensure a smooth experience for all students receiving aid this fall. Planning is also underway for the final system go-live and a transition to ongoing operations later this year.
  • The Classroom Modernization pilot, in partnership with Teaching and Learning and Facilities Management, is on track. Classroom upgrades have started, guided by faculty feedback on design and technology. The BruinCast team is enhancing pilot rooms with better recording and streaming, while ensuring existing spaces continue to run smoothly. The goal is to create a modern, scalable classroom model for the future.

Advancing AI

  • DTS has secured a low-cost enterprise license for OpenAI’s ChatGPT (edu version) and is enabling access to Google’s Gemini and Notebook LM (Standard edition). Starting Fall 2025, both ChatGPT Core and Google Gemini will be available to UCLA employees and students at a discounted rate. An AI Foundations course will soon launch as part of UCLA’s AI literacy platform for faculty and staff. Campuswide communications with details on how to access the course and where to find support will be shared in the coming weeks. We are also in the process of establishing a campuswide AI Committee as part of the campus IT Governance structure.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership. Each advancement we make reflects our collective commitment and the strength of our collaboration.

Best,

Lucy Avetisyan
